College Dorm Packing List

Ultimate

College classes are starting in just a couple of weeks which means college packing has already started! This is such an exciting time in your life! It’s the first time you get to not only move out but also plan your own dorm room! I’m sure you’re stressing about what to bring and how you’ll possibly fit everything you own into a tiny room. Let me just say: RELAX. There are Targets and Walmarts all over the country! If you forget something or something you bought isn’t working it will be okay. While that is true it is also super helpful to have as much as you can already bought and organized. Plus dealing with stores during move in weekend usually has crazy lines. I was very meticulous in my packing last year so I thought I’d share my college dorm packing list. Here’s the one I used and once I got to college I wasn’t missing anything! I hope my list serves you well! Good luck during move in!

Dorm Room:

  • Comforter or Duvet
    • Twin Duvet Insert if Duvet
  • Mattress Pad
  • Allergy protector for mattress (you don’t know what’s in those things…)
  • Sheets (Twin XL)
  • Pillow Inserts for Shams
  • Bed Skirt
  • Headboard (life saver! Loved not having to lean against a brick wall on my bed)
  • Under-the-bed Organizer (I used plastic drawers)
  • Shoe Organizer (I used a hanging one in my closet)
  • Small Mirror
  • Full Sized Mirror
  • Drying Rack
  • Towels
    • Washcloths
    • 2 Towels
    • 1 Hand Towel
  • Sink Skirt (if you have a sink in your room)
  • Shower Caddy
  • Shower Shoes
  • Desk Organizers (Inside of it and on top)
  • Desk Chair Cushion
  • Decorations
    • Frames
    • Wall Décor
  • Trash Can and trash bags
  • Curtains
    • Tension rod to hang them on
  • Ethernet Cable
  • Overnight bag
  • Jewelry Organizers
    • I put a hanging one in my closet and a small organizer in my end table for things I wore often
  • Drawer Dividers
  • Backpack
  • Laundry Supplies
    • Stain Remover
    • Detergent
  • Cleaning Supplies (and container to keep it in)
    • Swiffer duster
    • Clorox Wipes
    • Glass spray
  • Steamer
  • Mini-Vacuum
  • Screw Driver or tool kit
  • Change for the washer/dryer
  • Laundry Hamper
  • Small safe
  • Textbooks
  • School Supplies
  • Waterbottle
  • First Aid Kit
  • Plastic Tubs for organizing (Scout bags worked miracles for me!)
    • Smaller things (i.e. Nail polish, headbands)
    • Larger things (i.e. extra toiletries, winter clothes)
    • Keep an empty one to store all of your random koozies, sunglasses, cards, etc. you get over the semester
  • Printer
    • Paper
    • Ink
  • Full Room Rug (bought through the School)
  • Small Rug for Bedside
  • Hair Supplies Organizer
  • Command Strips
  • Power Cord Strip (UL Approved with Surge Protector)
  • Lamp for Bedside
    • Lamp Shade
  • Clock for Bedside
  • Dry erase board
  • Door Decorations (I used a sign)
  • Key holders
  • Bed Lifts (the taller the better)
  • Stool for bed
  • Pictures for desk and cork board
  • Agenda
  • Calendar for Desk
  • Desk Lamp
  • Hangers
    • Felt hangers
    • Clip hangers

Clothes:

T-shirts: Believe me once you get to college you’ll be stocking up on t-shirts left and right. Only take a few from home.

Winter Clothes: I brought a nice jacket, 2 pairs of jeans, scarf, boots, and 3 long sleeve tops. This served me well until Thanksgiving break but I also go to school in Texas

What if I want something I left at home? Believe me less is more when packing clothes for a little dorm room but clothes are super easy to ship if you’re going far from home and decide you want something you left behind. I took a video of my drawers and closet at home so when I was at school I could tell my parents what to ship me and where it was.
